ANSI stuff, use err() routine so error messages are right; nothing important

POSIX 1003.2 is not going to allow write errors to be ignored; let's
see if anything breaks. Also, malloc buffer for future speed

writing 16 bytes per device isn't kulturny. Sam had the right idea.
