1AMSFonts PostScript Fonts (Adobe Type 1 format) 2 3----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4The PostScript Type 1 implementation of the AMSFonts produced by and 5previously distributed by Blue Sky Research and Y&Y, Inc. are now freely 6available for general use. This has been accomplished through the cooperation 7of a consortium of scientific publishers with Blue Sky Research and Y&Y. 8Members of this consortium include: 9 10Elsevier Science IBM Corporation Society for Industrial and Applied 11Mathematics (SIAM) Springer-Verlag American Mathematical Society (AMS) 12 13In order to assure the authenticity of these fonts, copyright will be held by 14the American Mathematical Society. This is not meant to restrict in any way 15the legitimate use of the fonts, such as (but not limited to) electronic 16distribution of documents containing these fonts, inclusion of these fonts 17into other public domain or commercial font collections or computer 18applications, use of the outline data to create derivative fonts and/or 19faces, etc. However, the AMS does require that the AMS copyright notice be 20removed from any derivative versions of the fonts which have been altered in 21any way. In addition, to ensure the fidelity of TeX documents using Computer 22Modern fonts, Professor Donald Knuth, creator of the Computer Modern faces, 23has requested that any alterations which yield different font metrics be 24given a different name. 25 26The AMS does not provide technical support or installation assistance beyond 27any installation instructions included in this file. Installation and use of 28these fonts may require some technical expertise. Review this READ.ME file 29in its entirety before undertaking an installation. 30 31The fonts are available in Macintosh and PFB (binary Type 1) outline 32formats. 33 34The canonical version of the PostScript AMSFonts is located on 35the AMS FTP server, ftp.ams.org, at /pub/tex/psfonts/amsfonts. 36 37---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 38History 39 40The PostScript versions of the AMSFonts were produced by Blue Sky Research 41of Portland, Oregon, and Y&Y, Inc., of Concord, Massachusetts, who published 42the fonts in conjunction with their commercial implementations of the TeX 43program. 44 45Character outlines were derived from high-resolution METAFONT-generated 46character bitmaps by the ScanLab application from Projective Solutions (Ian 47Morrison and Henry Pinkham), applied and corrected by Douglas Henderson of 48Blue Sky Research. Character hints were created by software from Y&Y 49(Berthold and Blenda Horn), with extensive hand work by Blenda Horn. Font 50engineering, production, and packaging were by Douglas Henderson and Berthold 51Horn. 52 53---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 54Font Distributions 55 56The canonical version of the PostScript AMSFonts is located on the AMS 57FTP server, ftp.ams.org, at /pub/tex/psfonts/amsfonts. These fonts 58are also available on the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network (CTAN). 59 60The following three files are in this directory for you to download: 61 62amsps-textures.hqx for use with Textures, contains fonts in standard 63 Macintosh Type 1 format 64amsps-oztex.hqx for use with OzTeX, contains fonts in standard 65 Macintosh Type 1 format 66amsps-pc.zip for use on a Windows or DOS system, contains fonts 67 in PFB format with PFM metrics files 68amsps-unix.tar.gz for use on a Unix system, contains fonts in 69 PFB format with AFM metrics files 70 71 72Each distribution includes a READ.ME file which contains instructions 73for installing the fonts. Please review the READ.ME file in its entirety 74before undertaking to install the fonts on your system. 75 76
