To 13that end, we have a few ground rules that we ask people to adhere to: 14 15* `be friendly and patient`_, 16* `be welcoming`_, 17* `be considerate`_, 18* `be respectful`_, 19* `be careful in the words that you choose and be kind to others`_, and 20* `when we disagree, try to understand why`_. 21 22This isn't an exhaustive list of things that you can't do. Rather, take it in 23the spirit in which it's intended - a guide to make it easier to communicate 24and participate in the community. 25 26This code of conduct applies to all spaces managed by the LLVM project or The 27LLVM Foundation. This includes IRC and Discord channels, mailing lists, bug 28trackers, LLVM events such as the developer meetings and socials, and any other 29forums created by the project that the community uses for communication. It 30applies to all of your communication and conduct in these spaces, including 31emails, chats, things you say, slides, videos, posters, signs, or even t-shirts 32you display in these spaces. 33 34In rare cases, violations of this code outside of these spaces may affect a 35person’s ability to participate within these spaces. Important examples 36include `sexual and gender-based violence`_, `hate crimes`_, and `hate speech`_. 37We do not conduct proactive research, but we have an obligation to respond 38to any reported concerns. We are not interested in evaluating severity, 39responding punitively, or holding people accountable. Both the relevance 40and our response is instead focused on how a person’s continued participation 41impacts the community’s safety, wellbeing, and inclusivity. We specifically 42prioritize remaining a welcoming community to victims as well as groups 43subjected to systemic marginalization or underrepresentation. 44 45In addition, violations of this code outside these spaces may, in rare 46cases, affect a person's ability to participate within them, when the conduct 47amounts to an egregious violation of this code. 48 49If you believe someone is violating the code of conduct, we ask that you report 50it by emailing conduct@llvm.org. For more details please see the 51:doc:`Reporting Guide <ReportingGuide>`. 52 53.. _be friendly and patient: 54 55* **Be friendly and patient.** 56 57.. _be welcoming: 58 59* **Be welcoming.** We strive to be a community that welcomes and supports 60 people of all backgrounds and identities. This includes, but is not limited 61 to members of any race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, colour, 62 immigration status, social and economic class, educational level, sex, sexual 63 orientation, gender identity and expression, age, size, family status, 64 political belief, religion or lack thereof, and mental and physical ability. 65 66.. _be considerate: 67 68* **Be considerate.** Your work will be used by other people, and you in turn 69 will depend on the work of others. Any decision you take will affect users 70 and colleagues, and you should take those consequences into account. Remember 71 that we're a world-wide community, so you might not be communicating in 72 someone else's primary language. 73 74.. _be respectful: 75 76* **Be respectful.** Not all of us will agree all the time, but disagreement is 77 no excuse for poor behavior and poor manners. We might all experience some 78 frustration now and then, but we cannot allow that frustration to turn into 79 a personal attack. It's important to remember that a community where people 80 feel uncomfortable or threatened is not a productive one. Members of the LLVM 81 community should be respectful when dealing with other members as well as 82 with people outside the LLVM community. 83 84.. _be careful in the words that you choose and be kind to others: 85 86* **Be careful in the words that you choose and be kind to others.** Do not 87 insult or put down other participants. Harassment and other exclusionary 88 behavior aren't acceptable. This includes, but is not limited to: 89 90 * Violent threats or language directed against another person. 91 * Discriminatory jokes and language. 92 * Posting sexually explicit or violent material. 93 * Posting (or threatening to post) other people's personally identifying 94 information ("doxing"). 95 * Personal insults, especially those using racist or sexist terms. 96 * Unwelcome sexual attention. 97 * Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior. 98 99 In general, if someone asks you to stop, then stop. Persisting in such 100 behavior after being asked to stop is considered harassment. 101 102.. _when we disagree, try to understand why: 103 104* **When we disagree, try to understand why.** Disagreements, both social and 105 technical, happen all the time and LLVM is no exception. It is important that 106 we resolve disagreements and differing views constructively. Remember that 107 we're different. The strength of LLVM comes from its varied community, people 108 from a wide range of backgrounds. Different people have different 109 perspectives on issues. Being unable to understand why someone holds 110 a viewpoint doesn't mean that they're wrong. Don't forget that it is human to 111 err and blaming each other doesn't get us anywhere. Instead, focus on helping 112 to resolve issues and learning from mistakes. 113 114Reporting 115========= 116 117If you believe someone is violating the code of conduct you can always report 118it to the LLVM Foundation Code of Conduct Committee by emailing 119conduct@llvm.org. All reports will be kept confidential. This isn't a public 120list and only members of the advisory committee will receive the report. For 121details on what to include in the report, please see the :doc:`Reporting Guide 122<ReportingGuide>`. 123 124If you believe anyone is in physical danger, please notify appropriate law 125enforcement first. If you are unsure what law enforcement agency is 126appropriate, please include this in your report and we will attempt to notify 127them. 128 129If the violation occurs at an event such as a Developer Meeting and requires 130immediate attention, you can also reach out to any of the event organizers or 131staff. Event organizers and staff will be prepared to handle the incident and 132able to help. If you cannot find one of the organizers, the venue staff can 133locate one for you. We will also post detailed contact information for specific 134events as part of each events' information. In person reports will still be 135kept confidential exactly as above, but also feel free to (anonymously if 136needed) email conduct@llvm.org. 137 138Bans 139==== 140 141The code of conduct committee may decide to ban an individual from the 142community for violating the code of conduct. The goal of a ban is to protect 143community members from having to interact with people who are consistently not 144respecting the code of conduct. Please refer to the 145:doc:`Developer Policy<DeveloperPolicy>` section on Bans for how to handle 146interactions with former community members. If you need further guidance, 147please contact conduct@llvm.org. 148 149Code of Conduct Committee 150========================= 151 152The committee will consist of a minimum of 5 members and members are asked to 153serve at least a 1 year term. New committee members will be selected by the 154current committee and the LLVM Foundation Board of Directors. 155 156When responding to a Code of Conduct report, the committee follows the 157following 158:doc:`Response Guide<ResponseGuide>`. 159 160The current committee members are: 161 162* Kit Barton (kbarton\@llvm.org) 163* Kristof Beyls (kristof.beyls\@llvm.org) 164* Stella Stamenova (sstamenova\@llvm.org) 165* David Blaikie (dblaikie\@llvm.org) 166* Mike Edwards (medwards\@llvm.org) 167* Cyndy Ishida (cishida\@llvm.org) 168* Tanya Lattner (tanyalattner\@llvm.org) 169 170 171Transparency Reports 172==================== 173 174* `July 15, 2024 <https://discourse.llvm.org/t/llvm-code-of-conduct-transparency-report-july-15-2023-july-15-2024/82687>`_ 175* `July 15, 2023 <https://llvm.org/coc-reports/2023-07-15-report.html>`_ 176* `July 15, 2022 <https://llvm.org/coc-reports/2022-07-15-report.html>`_ 177* `April 28, 2022 <https://llvm.org/coc-reports/2022-04-28-report.html>`_ 178 179For details about what a Transparency Report is and what it contains, please see the :doc:`Response Guide<ResponseGuide>`. 180 181Questions? 182========== 183 184If you have questions, please feel free to contact the LLVM Foundation Code of 185Conduct Committee by emailing conduct@llvm.org. 186 187Thanks! 188======= 189 190This text is based on the `Django Project`_ Code of Conduct, which is in turn 191based on wording from the `Speak Up! project`_. 192 193License 194======= 195 196All content on this page is licensed under a `Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 197Unported License`_. 198 199.. _Django Project: https://www.djangoproject.com/conduct/ 200.. _Speak Up! project: http://speakup.io/coc.html 201.. _sexual and gender-based violence: https://hr.un.org/sites/hr.un.org/files/SEA%20Glossary%20%20%5BSecond%20Edition%20-%202017%5D%20-%20English_0.pdf 202.. _hate crimes: https://hatecrime.osce.org 203.. _hate speech: https://www.un.org/en/genocideprevention/documents/UN%20Strategy%20and%20Plan%20of%20Action%20on%20Hate%20Speech%2018%20June%20SYNOPSIS.pdf 204.. _Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ 205
