1 2Computer Modern PostScript Fonts 3(Adobe Type 1 format) 4 5----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6The PostScript Type 1 implementation of the Computer Modern fonts produced by 7and previously distributed by Blue Sky Research and Y&Y, Inc. are now freely 8available for general use. This has been accomplished through the cooperation 9of a consortium of scientific publishers with Blue Sky Research and Y&Y. 10Members of this consortium include: 11 12 Elsevier Science 13 IBM Corporation 14 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) 15 Springer-Verlag 16 American Mathematical Society (AMS) 17 18In order to assure the authenticity of these fonts, copyright will be held 19by the American Mathematical Society. This is not meant to restrict in any 20way the legitimate use of the fonts, such as (but not limited to) electronic 21distribution of documents containing these fonts, inclusion of these fonts 22into other public domain or commercial font collections or computer 23applications, use of the outline data to create derivative fonts and/or 24faces, etc. However, the AMS does require that the AMS copyright notice be 25removed from any derivative versions of the fonts which have been altered in 26any way. In addition, to ensure the fidelity of TeX documents using Computer 27Modern fonts, Professor Donald Knuth, creator of the Computer Modern faces, 28has requested that any alterations which yield different font metrics be 29given a different name. 30 31The AMS does not provide technical support or installation assistance 32beyond any installation instructions included in this file. Installation 33and use of these fonts may require some technical expertise. Review this 34READ.ME file in its entirety before undertaking an installation. 35 36---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 37History 38 39The PostScript versions of the Computer Modern fonts were produced in 1988 40by Blue Sky Research of Portland, Oregon, and Y&Y, Inc., of Concord, 41Massachusetts, who published the fonts in conjunction with their commercial 42implementations of the TeX program. 43 44Character outlines were derived from high-resolution METAFONT-generated 45character bitmaps by the ScanLab application from Projective Solutions (Ian 46Morrison and Henry Pinkham), applied and corrected by Douglas Henderson of 47Blue Sky Research. Character hints were created by software from Y&Y 48(Berthold and Blenda Horn), with extensive hand work by Blenda Horn. Font 49engineering, production, and packaging were by Douglas Henderson and 50Berthold Horn. The CMMI* fonts were revised in 1996 to conform to Knuth's 51changes to the greek delta and arrow characters. 52 53---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 54Font Distributions 55 56The canonical version of the Computer Modern PostScript Fonts is located on 57the AMS FTP server, ftp.ams.org, at /pub/tex/psfonts/cm. These fonts are 58also available on the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network (CTAN) in 59fonts/cm/ps-type1/bluesky. 60 61The following three files are in this directory for you to download: 62 63cmps-textures.hqx for use with Textures, contains fonts in standard 64 Macintosh Type 1 format 65cmps-oztex.hqx for use with OzTeX, contains fonts in standard 66 Macintosh Type 1 format 67cmps-pc.zip for use on a Windows or DOS system, contains fonts 68 in PFB format with PFM metrics files 69cmps-unix.tar.gz for use on a Unix system, contains fonts in 70 PFB format with AFM metrics files 71 72 73Each distribution includes a READ.ME file which contains instructions 74for installing the fonts. Please review the READ.ME file in its entirety 75before undertaking to install the fonts on your system. 76 77
