A hardware 69device may be supported with a character or block 70.Em device driver , 71or it may be used within the networking subsystem and have a 72.Em network interface driver . 73Block and character devices are accessed through files in the file 74system of a special type; see 75.Xr mknod 8 . 76Network interfaces are indirectly accessed through the interprocess 77communication facilities provided by the system; see 78.Xr socket 2 . 79.Pp 80A hardware device is identified to the system at configuration time 81and the appropriate device or network interface driver is then compiled 82into the system. When the resultant system is booted, the 83autoconfiguration facilities in the system probe for the device 84and, if found, enable the software support for it. 85If a device does not respond at autoconfiguration 86time it is not accessible at any time afterwards. 87To enable a device which did not autoconfigure, 88the system will have to be rebooted. 89.Pp 90The autoconfiguration system is described in 91.Xr mvme68k/autoconf 4 . 92A list of the supported devices is given below. 93.Sh LIST OF DEVICES 94The devices listed below are supported in this incarnation of 95the system. 96Devices are indicated by their functional interface. 97Not all supported devices are listed. 98.Bl -tag -width "xxxxxx" -compact -offset indent 99.It Em clmpcc 100Cirrus Logic CD2401 four channel Communications controller 101.It Em clock 102Hardware counter/timer clock driver 103.It Em ie 104.Tn Intel 10582596-based Ethernet interface 106.It Em kmem 107kernel virtual memory 108.It Em le 109.Tn AMD 110Lance-based Ethernet interface 111.It Em lpt 112Onboard parallel printer interface 113.It Em mem 114physical memory 115.It Em mcchip 116MVME162 and MVME172 MCChip (similar to PCCchip2) 117.It Em ncrsc 118.Tn NCR 11953c710 SCSI I/O Processor 120.It Em pcc 121MVME147 PCC Chip 122.It Em pcctwo 123MVME167 and MVME177 PCCchip2 124.It Em vmepcc 125MVME147 VMEbus interface chip 126.It Em vmetwo 127MVME1[67]x Enhanced VMEbus interface chip 128.It Em wdsc 129WD33c93 SCSI Bus Interface Controller 130.It Em zsc 131.Tn Zilog 132Z8530 Dual-port Serial Interface on MVME147 and MVME162 133.El 134.Sh SEE ALSO 135.Xr config 1 , 136.Xr mvme68k/autoconf 4 137.Sh HISTORY 138The 139.Tn mvme68k 140.Nm intro 141man page first appeared in 142.Nx 1.5 . 143
