related driver functions, 35and networking support available in the system. 36In this part of the manual, 37the SYNOPSIS section of each configurable device gives a sample specification 38for use in constructing a system description for the 39.Xr config 8 40program. 41The DIAGNOSTICS section lists messages which may appear on the console 42and/or in the system error log 43.Pa /var/log/messages 44due to errors in device operation; see 45.Xr syslogd 8 46for more information. 47.Pp 48This section contains both devices which may be configured into the system 49and network related information. 50The networking support is introduced in 51.Xr netintro 4 . 52.Sh DEVICE SUPPORT 53This section describes the hardware supported on the 54.Tn HP PA-RISC 55platform. 56Software support for these devices comes in two forms. 57A hardware device may be supported with a character or block 58.Em device driver , 59or it may be used within the networking subsystem and have a 60.Em network interface driver . 61Character and block devices are accessed through files in the file 62system of a special type; see 63.Xr mknod 8 . 64Network interfaces are indirectly accessed through the interprocess 65communication facilities provided by the system; see 66.Xr socket 2 . 67.Pp 68A hardware device is identified to the system at configuration time 69and the appropriate device or network interface driver is then compiled 70into the system. 71When the resultant system is booted, the autoconfiguration facilities 72in the system probe for the device and, if found, 73enable the software support for it. 74If a device does not respond at autoconfiguration 75time it is not accessible at any time afterwards. 76To enable a device which did not autoconfigure, the system must be rebooted. 77.Pp 78The autoconfiguration system is described in 79.Xr autoconf 4 . 80.Sh SUPPORTED SYSTEMS 81A list of 82.Tn HP 9000/700 83models targetted for support is listed below, including basic 84system
