39.Sh NAME
40.Nm phones
41.Nd remote host phone number data base
42.Sh DESCRIPTION
43The file
44.Pa /etc/phones
45contains the system-wide
46private phone numbers for the
47.Xr tip 1
48program. This file is normally unreadable, and so may contain
49privileged information. The format of the file is a series of lines
50of the form: <system-name>[\ \et]*<phone-number>. The system name is
51one of those defined in the
52.Xr remote 5
53file and the phone number is constructed from any sequence of
54characters terminated only by ``,'' or the end of the line.
55The ``='' and ``*'' characters are
56indicators to the auto call units to pause and wait for a second dial
57tone (when going through an exchange). The ``='' is required by the
58.Tn DF02-AC
59and the ``*'' is required by the
60.Tn BIZCOMP
611030.
62.Pp
63Only one phone number per line is permitted. However, if more than
64one line in the file contains the same system name
65.Xr tip 1
66will attempt to dial each one in turn, until it establishes a connection.
