A hardware 72device may be supported with a character or block 73.Em device driver , 74or it may be used within the networking subsystem and have a 75.Em network interface driver . 76Block and character devices are accessed through files in the file 77system of a special type; see 78.Xr mknod 8 . 79Network interfaces are indirectly accessed through the interprocess 80communication facilities provided by the system; see 81.Xr socket 2 . 82.Pp 83A hardware device is identified to the system at configuration time 84and the appropriate device or network interface driver is then compiled 85into the system. When the resultant system is booted, the 86autoconfiguration facilities in the system probe for the device 87and, if found, enable the software support for it. 88If a device does not respond at autoconfiguration 89time it is not accessible at any time afterwards. 90To enable a device which did not autoconfigure, 91the system will have to be rebooted. 92.Pp 93The autoconfiguration system is described in 94.Xr autoconf 4 . 95A list of the supported devices is given below. 96.Sh SEE ALSO 97.Xr intro 4 , 98.Xr intro 4 , 99.Xr autoconf 4 , 100.Xr config 8 . 101.Rs 102.%T "Building 4.3 BSD UNIX Systems with Config (SMM:2)" 103.Re 104.Sh LIST OF DEVICES 105The devices listed below are supported in this incarnation of 106the system. Pseudo-devices are not listed. 107Devices are indicated by their functional interface. 108Occasionally, new devices of a similar type may be added 109simply by creating appropriate table entries in the driver; 110for example, new 111.Tn CS/80 112drives. 113.Bl -column grf/ite -offset indent 114ct 7946/9144 CS/80 cartridge tape 115dca 98644 built-in serial interface 116dcl HP 98628A communications link 117dcm HP 98642A communications multiplexer 118dma 98620B DMA controller 119dv HP98730 ``DaVinci'' device interface 120gb HP98700 ``Gatorbox'' device interface 121grf/ite Topcat/Gatorbox/Renaissance frame buffer 122hil HIL interface 123hpib Built-in and 98625 HP-IB interface 124ite HP Internal Terminal Emulator 125le 98643 Lance-based ethernet interface 126mem main memory 127ppi HP-IB printer/plotter interface 128rb HP98720 ``Renaissance'' device interface 129rd CS/80 disk interface 130rmp HP Remote Maintenance Protocol family 131st CCS SCSI tape drive 132tc HP98544-98550 ``Topcat'' and ``Catseye'' device interface 133.El 134.Sh HISTORY 135The 136.Tn HP300 137.Nm intro 138appeared in 139.Bx 4.3 Reno . 140
