39.Nd introduction to special files and hardware support
40.Sh DESCRIPTION
41This section describes the special files, related driver functions,
42and networking support
43available in the system.
44In this part of the manual, the
45.Tn SYNOPSIS
46section of
47each configurable device gives a sample specification
48for use in constructing a system description for the
49.Xr config 8
50program.
51The
52.Tn DIAGNOSTICS
53section lists messages which may appear on the console
54and/or in the system error log
55.Pa /usr/adm/messages
56due to errors in device operation;
57see
58.Xr syslogd 8
59for more information.
60.Pp
61This section contains both devices
62which may be configured into the system
63and network related information.
64The networking support is introduced in
65.Xr netintro 4 .
66.Sh HP DEVICE SUPPORT
67This section describes the hardware supported on the
68.Tn HP
699000/300 series.
70Software support for these devices comes in two forms. A hardware
71device may be supported with a character or block
72.Em device driver ,
73or it may be used within the networking subsystem and have a
74.Em network interface driver .
75Block and character devices are accessed through files in the file
76system of a special type; see
77.Xr mknod 8 .
78Network interfaces are indirectly accessed through the interprocess
79communication facilities provided by the system; see
80.Xr socket 2 .
81.Pp
82A hardware device is identified to the system at configuration time
83and the appropriate device or network interface driver is then compiled
84into the system. When the resultant system is booted, the
85autoconfiguration facilities in the system probe for the device
86and, if found, enable the software support for it.
87If a device does not respond at autoconfiguration
88time it is not accessible at any time afterwards.
89To enable a device which did not autoconfigure,
90the system will have to be rebooted.
91.Pp
92The autoconfiguration system is described in
93.Xr autoconf 4 .
94A list of the supported devices is given below.

103.Sh LIST OF DEVICES
104The devices listed below are supported in this incarnation of
105the system. Pseudo-devices are not listed.
106Devices are indicated by their functional interface.
107Occasionally, new devices of a similar type may be added
108simply by creating appropriate table entries in the driver;
109for example, new
110.Tn CS/80
111drives.
