A hardware 71device may be supported with a character or block 72.Em device driver , 73or it may be used within the networking subsystem and have a 74.Em network interface driver . 75Block and character devices are accessed through files in the file 76system of a special type; see 77.Xr mknod 8 . 78Network interfaces are indirectly accessed through the interprocess 79communication facilities provided by the system; see 80.Xr socket 2 . 81.Pp 82A hardware device is identified to the system at configuration time 83and the appropriate device or network interface driver is then compiled 84into the system. When the resultant system is booted, the 85autoconfiguration facilities in the system probe for the device 86and, if found, enable the software support for it. 87If a device does not respond at autoconfiguration 88time it is not accessible at any time afterwards. 89To enable a device which did not autoconfigure, 90the system will have to be rebooted. 91.Pp 92The autoconfiguration system is described in 93.Xr autoconf 4 . 94A list of the supported devices is given below. 95.Sh SEE ALSO 96.Xr intro 4 , 97.Xr intro 4 , 98.Xr autoconf 4 , 99.Xr config 8 . 100.Rs 101.%T "Building 4.3 BSD UNIX Systems with Config (SMM:2)" 102.Re 103.Sh LIST OF DEVICES 104The devices listed below are supported in this incarnation of 105the system. Pseudo-devices are not listed. 106Devices are indicated by their functional interface. 107Occasionally, new devices of a similar type may be added 108simply by creating appropriate table entries in the driver; 109for example, new 110.Tn CS/80 111drives. 112.Bl -column grf/ite -offset indent 113ct 7946/9144 CS/80 cartridge tape 114dca 98644 built-in serial interface 115dcl HP 98628A communications link 116dcm HP 98642A communications multiplexer 117dma 98620B DMA controller 118dv HP98730 ``DaVinci'' device interface 119gb HP98700 ``Gatorbox'' device interface 120grf/ite Topcat/Gatorbox/Renaissance frame buffer 121hil HIL interface 122hpib Built-in and 98625 HP-IB interface 123ite HP Internal Terminal Emulator 124le 98643 Lance-based ethernet interface 125mem main memory 126ppi HP-IB printer/plotter interface 127rb HP98720 ``Renaissance'' device interface 128rd CS/80 disk interface 129rmp HP Remote Maintenance Protocol family 130st CCS SCSI tape drive 131tc HP98544-98550 ``Topcat'' and ``Catseye'' device interface 132.El 133.Sh HISTORY 134The 135.Tn HP300 136.Nm intro 137appeared in 138.Bx 4.3 Reno . 139
