35.Sh NAME
36.Nm ep
37.Nd Ethernet driver for 3Com Etherlink III (3c5x9)
38.Sh SYNOPSIS
39.Cd "ep? at isa? port ? irq ?"
40.Sh DESCRIPTION
41The
42.Nm ep
43device driver supports the 3c509 (ISA) and 3c579 (EISA) cards.
44Various models of these cards come with a different assortment of
45connectors:
46.Pp
47.Bl -tag -width xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
48.It AUI/DIX
49Standard 15 pin connector
50.It 10Base2
51BNC, also known as thin-net
52.It 10BaseT
53UTP, also known as twisted pair
54.El
55.Pp
56The default port to use is the BNC. To choose an alternate port,
57use the following flag combinations with
58.Xr ifconfig 8
59or in your /etc/hostname.ep? file.
60.Pp
61.Bl -tag -width xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
62.It -link0
63Use the BNC port (default).
64.It \ link0 -link1
65Use the AUI port.
66.It \ link0 \ link1
67Use the UTP port.
68.El
69.Pp
70If there are multiple cards in the computer, they are searched for
71in the following order:
72The 3c579 EISA cards are searched for first -- they will be found
73in EISA slot# order.
74Next, the 3c509 ISA cards are searched -- they are found in increasing
75ethernet address order.
76This is an example of how they will probe:
77.Pp
78ep0 at isa0 port 0x6000-0x600f irq 10: aui/bnc address 00:60:8c:70:e5:c5
79ep1 at isa0 port 0x300-0x30f irq 3: aui/bnc/utp address 00:20:af:10:62:ab
80.Pp
81You may specify the port and irq numbers that the cards are expected
82to be found at, but it is not necessary.
83The cards are sufficiently intelligent to tell us where they
84actually live on the ISA bus.
85.Pp
86.Sh NOTES
87The 3c509 card has no jumpers to set the address.
883COM supplies software to set the address of the card in software.
89To find the card on the ISA bus, the kernel performs a complex
90scan operation at IO address 0x100.
91Beware!
92Avoid placing other cards at that address!
93.Pp
94Some models of 3c5x9 have all three connectors on them.
95In the case of these cards; you must configure the transceiver type
96with the 3COM supplied DOS configuration disk before the link0/link1
97flags will operate correctly.
98.Pp
99.Sh DIAGNOSTICS
100ep0: reset (status: %x)
101.in +4
102the driver has encountered a FIFO underrun or overrun. The driver will reset
103the card and the packet will be lost. This is not fatal.
104.in -4
105ep0: eeprom failed to come ready
106.in +4
107The eeprom failed to come ready. This probably means the card is wedged.
108.in -4
109ep0: 3c509 in test mode. Erase pencil mark!
110.in +4
111This means that someone has scribbled with pencil in the test area on the
112card. Erase the pencil mark and reboot. (This is not a joke).
